Affiliate programs encourage you to promote products to potential buyers. In exchange, they pay you a set amount of money or a percentage of the sale.

These programs are quite popular among home-based entrepreneurs, site owners and bloggers because it requires the minimum amount of skills and experience.

In fact, it has even become a good source of extra income for many people. But there are promises and there are complaints. If you’re wondering if you can really make money joining online affiliate programs, here are some things you need to know:

Online affiliate programs may differ but they work using the same model.
Affiliate marketing programs are marketing programs that earn money from selling products and/or services. Although these started out as offline businesses, they have since expanded online. These programs recruit ‘associates’ or ‘affiliates’ who earn a commission by promoting the program’s products.

Affiliates attract buyers to their site and entice them to click on the ads placed by the company. Since these clicks are tracked, the company is able to monitor how many clients an affiliate has referred. This record is used as the basis for payment. The more clicks or purchases visitors to your site perform, the more money you make.

It’s generally easy work for affiliates but it’s rare for affiliate programs to sell themselves. Oftentimes, affiliates have to actively promote the products in order to encourage people to buy.

Not every online affiliate program is legit.
Beware of online affiliate programs that promise too much, too soon. while it is possible to make money from these programs, they’re not really what you’d call ‘easy money’. True, there’s relatively little effort and expense on your part but that doesn’t mean you’ll be a millionaire in three months’ time or earn enough money to retire. Remember: if the site promises too much, it might not deliver as much.

There is money to be made, but…
There are experienced affiliates who have made significant amounts of money in these programs. However, these are only a small percentage of the total number of people involved. There are thousands of others out there who either do not make much or don’t earn anything under certain programs. There are several reasons for this, which might be a combination of any of the following:

- the popularity of the product or service
- the type of product or service being offered
- the number of traffic to the affiliate’s website
- the compensation plan of the affiliate program
- the content of your website
- how well you understand the program

So can you really make money joining online affiliate programs?
One thing that people who join online affiliate programs should remember is that these are businesses and must be treated as such.
